Virgo New Moon: The Furrow Before the Seed

♍️ Virgo New Moon: The Furrow Before the Seed 🌱

Sep 07, 2026

The September 2026 New Moon in Virgo arrives on Thursday, September 10 at 8:27 PM Pacific, 9:27 PM Mountain, 10:27 PM Central, and 11:27 PM Eastern. In UTC and many parts of the world farther east, the New Moon occurs on September 11 at 03:27 UTC. This is why you may see both September 10 and September 11 listed online.

Astrologically, the Sun and Moon meet at 18°26′ Virgo, beginning a fresh lunar cycle centered around how we care for our lives, our energy, our daily rhythms, and what we are ready to grow next. (Time and Date)

And there is an ancient story hidden inside this New Moon that completely changed the way I see Virgo.

It begins with a line drawn into the Earth. A furrow.

Before I Tell You About the Furrow...

September has always felt a little like a second January to me. The light changes. The pace changes. Something in me naturally starts looking around at my life.

  • What is working?
  • What needs my attention?
  • What do I want to carry into the rest of the year?

This September, those questions feel especially personal. As I write this, a high-level leadership program I created inside The Psychic Soul is getting ready to graduate.

For the past five months, this program has stretched me beyond what I believed I was capable of.

I have been in what I can only describe as a constant cycle of expansion and contraction.

  • I expand into a new level of leadership.
  • Then I pull inward and catch up with myself.
  • Then life asks me to expand again.

Some parts have felt incredibly uncomfortable. Other parts have been beyond empowering!

I have been asked to show up, lead, create, hold standards, make decisions, and meet parts of myself that were ready for a new level of growth.

Now this chapter is coming to a close. And something I have had very little of for the past five months is about to return.

Time for me.

Time to tend to my own energy.

Time to care for the parts of my life that have received less of me while I have been pouring so much into something I deeply care about.

Time to tend to my own soil.

Then I began researching the ancient history of Virgo for this New Moon. And there she was!

The Furrow.

Virgo Was Once Called “The Furrow”

This is much older than the modern Virgo stereotypes of lists, planners, routines, and perfectly organized spice drawers.

In the ancient Babylonian astronomical text MUL.APIN, the constellation we now know as Virgo was connected with “The Furrow.”

The same text links the constellation with Šala, the ear of grain, a goddess believed to have power over crop fertility.

And Virgo's brightest star still carries that agricultural story. Its name is Spica, from the Latin for an “ear of grain.” (Oracc)

A furrow is the line made in the soil before a seed is planted.

The Earth is opened.

The soil is prepared.

Then the seed goes in.

And I thought: Of course. Because that is exactly what Virgo has been asking me to do.

For me, the furrow is more than preparing soil. It's also a line in the sand.

  • What belongs in my next chapter?
  • What has served its purpose?
  • What am I ready to give my energy to?
  • What supports my highest and best timeline for the greater good of all?
  • And what ends at this line?

That idea sits at the heart of everything I create within The Psychic Soul.

We tend to our own energy first. Then we bring that energy into our families, friendships, businesses, communities, and the world. I believe we are all stewards of humanity in some way. Every person influences the spaces they enter. So the way we care for ourselves matters far beyond ourselves.

We serve from the soil we have tended. That is the heartbeat I feel inside this Virgo New Moon. Before we rush to plant another seed, Virgo asks us to look at the ground beneath it.

The Ancient Maiden, Grain and Virgo Mythology

As centuries passed, Virgo collected different stories.

In Greek sky lore, Virgo became the Maiden.

One tradition connected her with Dike or Astraea, a figure associated with justice and right order. In the ancient poem Phaenomena, the Maiden is described carrying an ear of grain.

Other traditions linked Virgo with harvest goddesses and the story of Demeter and Persephone, connecting Virgo again with grain, cultivation, Earth, seasons, loss, return, and renewal. (Theoi)

There has never been only one Virgo story. Yet the same threads keep appearing:

  • Earth.
  • Grain.
  • Care.
  • Order.
  • Harvest.
  • Cycles.
  • And preparation.

That feels very different from the way we sometimes talk about manifestation today.

We often start with the seed.

What do I want?

What am I calling in?

What am I manifesting?

Virgo begins one step earlier: What will this seed grow in?

Why Is the New Moon Dark?

A New Moon happens when the Moon and Sun come together at the same place along their path through our sky.

The Moon is still there.

We simply see almost none of its illuminated side because the side facing Earth is in darkness and the Moon is close to the Sun in our sky. NASA defines the exact New Moon as the moment when the Sun and Moon have the same geocentric ecliptic longitude. (NASA Scientific Visualization Studio)

Spiritually, I love what this represents! So much of life begins before we can see it.

A seed disappears beneath the soil before it sprouts.

A decision happens inside us before anyone else knows we have made it.

A boundary begins as a quiet inner knowing.

A dream exists as energy long before it has a physical form.

The dark Moon gives us permission to be inside that part of creation. The unseen part. The part where we can be still and listen.

What Does the September 2026 Virgo New Moon Mean Spiritually?

At this New Moon, both the Sun and Moon are in Virgo.

In astrology, the Sun speaks to our life force and conscious expression.

The Moon speaks to our inner world, feelings, needs, habits, and natural rhythms.

When they come together in an Earth sign like Virgo, our inner life and outer life get an opportunity to meet.

Virgo asks practical questions:

  • What deserves my energy?
  • What needs care?
  • What small thing would make daily life feel better?
  • Where could I simplify?
  • What has become a habit simply because I have repeated it?
  • What would happen if I gave the same care to myself that I so easily give to others?
  • And what is ready to become a new standard?

This particular New Moon at 18°26′ Virgo also forms a supportive connection with Mars in Cancer, giving the lunation some movement behind it. Symbolically, I read that as an invitation to turn care into action. Something small and real can follow the inner knowing. (Cafe Astrology)

September 10 is also astrologically busy. Venus enters Scorpio. Mercury enters Libra. Uranus stations retrograde in Gemini. Then the Virgo New Moon arrives later that evening in the United States. (Cafe Astrology)

That is quite a cosmic staff meeting for one day! I see a common thread.

  • What matters is getting deeper.
  • The way we communicate is shifting.
  • Old ideas and systems are ready for review.

And Virgo asks: What are you going to do with what you now know?

How Might You Feel During the Virgo New Moon?

Astrology gives us themes rather than one guaranteed emotional experience.

  • You may feel energized.
  • You may feel tired.
  • You may want to clean your house.
  • You may want everyone to please stop asking you questions so you can stare at a tree for an hour.
  • Your experience is yours!

Yet Virgo symbolism can bring our attention toward details, health, routines, work, service, habits, organization, and the places in life that could use more care.

  • You might notice a stronger desire to simplify.
  • You may suddenly see where your time is going.
  • Your mind may become busy with plans.
  • Your body may ask for rest or a healthier rhythm.
  • An emotional pattern may become easier to name.
  • You may feel the urge to clear your space.

Or you may simply know: I am ready to do this differently.

This is where I like to work with what I call our four energy bodies.

The words can sound complicated. The idea is actually very simple!

Your Four Energy Bodies, Explained Simply

Different spiritual traditions describe the human energy system in different ways.

For this Virgo New Moon Meditation, I use four simple parts of our experience:

Subtle. Mental. Emotional. Physical.

Think of them as four ways to check in with the same person.

You.

We begin with the part we can feel more than see, then slowly move toward the body we can touch. That is the same sequence used throughout this meditation.

1. Your Subtle Body: Your Energy

Your subtle body is your energetic self.

In spiritual language, you might call this your life force, Spirit, aura, intuition, presence, or Soul energy.

It is the part you often feel before you can explain it.

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately felt something?

Have you ever met someone and known how you felt around them before they said very much?

Have you ever known it was time to make a change before your mind had figured out all the reasons?

That is one way people experience subtle energy.

So we begin there.

Ask: How does my energy feel today?

  • Open?
  • Full?
  • Heavy?
  • Scattered?
  • Strong?
  • Quiet?
  • Ready for change?

You are simply listening.

Inside the meditation, your subtle body receives this message: I am open to receive all of the blessings of the Universe. Now show me how extraordinary life can be.

This is where we begin tending the soil.

2. Your Mental Body: Your Thoughts

Your mental body is your thinking self.

  • Thoughts.
  • Beliefs.
  • Plans.
  • Opinions.
  • Memories.
  • Inner conversations.
  • The story running through your head while you are trying to fall asleep.

Virgo energy loves details, which can make our mental body incredibly useful. It can also create seventeen open tabs in our brain at the same time.

  • One is planning tomorrow.
  • One is replaying a conversation.
  • One suddenly remembers an email.
  • One has decided the pantry needs to be reorganized.
  • One is wondering what happened to that random person from high school.

The mental body needs tending too.

We can ask: What story has my mind been repeating?

And: Is this the story I want to keep feeding?

The meditation gives the mental body a new message: My mind is clear, calm and balanced. We are creating a healthier place for the next seed to grow.

3. Your Emotional Body: Your Feelings

Your emotional body is the part of you that feels.

  • Love.
  • Joy.
  • Anger.
  • Sadness.
  • Peace.
  • Fear.
  • Hope.
  • Grief.
  • Excitement.
  • Disappointment.

Our emotions can tell us that something matters.

  • They can show us where a boundary lives.
  • They can point toward something we love.
  • They can tell us when an experience needs more care.

During this practice, we give our emotions space rather than asking them to hurry along.

Ask: What feeling wants my attention today?

You may have a word right away. You may simply feel something in your body. Both are enough.

Inside the meditation, the emotional body receives this message: I am safe and loved when my emotions flow through me, guiding me toward my highest good.

Feelings can move when they have room.

4. Your Physical Body: Your Human Body

Your physical body is the part you can touch.

  • Your skin.
  • Muscles.
  • Bones.
  • Heart.
  • Belly.
  • Breath.
  • Brain.
  • Nervous system.
  • Hands.
  • Feet.

The body that has carried you through every single experience of your life. Virgo has long been associated astrologically with health, daily care, routines, and the small things we repeatedly do.

So we end our four-body journey here.

Ask: What does my body need from me?

Maybe it is sleep.

  • Water.
  • Movement.
  • Food.
  • Quiet.
  • Nature.
  • A slower morning.
  • A walk.
  • A medical appointment.
  • More time outside.
  • A boundary.
  • One full breath.

Virgo reminds us that care can be wonderfully ordinary! A small act repeated with love can become a very different life.

Why Tend All Four Bodies Together?

Because each part of us communicates with the others.

  • A stressful thought can change our breathing.
  • An emotion can change the way our body feels.
  • Physical exhaustion can change the kinds of thoughts we have.
  • A few slower breaths can change what we notice.

Modern research gives us a useful bridge here.

Heart rate variability, or HRV, is the tiny change in time between one heartbeat and the next. Researchers often use it as one way to study how our autonomic nervous system responds and adapts.

A large 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 223 studies found that voluntary slow breathing increased measures of vagally mediated HRV during breathing, immediately afterward, and after longer interventions. (PubMed)

HeartMath uses the term coherence for a more ordered heart-rhythm pattern that can occur with certain breathing and emotional self-regulation practices. A 2025 review from HeartMath researchers describes communication among the heart, lungs, brainstem, emotional systems, and higher brain areas. For transparency, the authors are affiliated with the HeartMath Institute, so I view this as one useful framework alongside the broader breathing and HRV research. (PubMed)

The takeaway can stay very simple: We are whole beings.

Our thoughts, feelings, breath, body, and nervous system are constantly communicating.

This research speaks to the value of the practice. The astrology gives us the symbolic moment to practice it.

And that is exactly what we do inside this Virgo New Moon Meditation.

Virgo New Moon Guided Meditation: Tend Your Four Bodies

I created this meditation as a journey through your entire energetic field.

We begin by grounding into the Earth.

Then we move through your:

Subtle body.
Mental body.
Emotional body.
Physical body.

You will have time to listen to each one, notice the story it has been carrying, and choose what you want to bring into your next lunar cycle.

This is the furrow before the seed.

Before asking the Universe for more, we spend time with the energy that will receive it.

Find a position that feels comfortable.

Allow yourself to receive.

And if your attention drifts for a little while, simply return whenever you notice.

Your practice belongs to you.

Does the Moon Affect Our Emotions, Sleep or Nervous System?

Humans have watched the Moon and organized rituals, calendars, agriculture, ceremonies, and spiritual practices around its cycles for thousands of years.

Modern science continues to study how lunar cycles may interact with human biology.

The research is still developing. For example, a 2021 study that tracked sleep across communities in Argentina and the United States found that people tended to fall asleep later and sleep for less time in the days leading up to a Full Moon. Researchers proposed nighttime moonlight as one possible reason for the pattern. (PubMed)

That research raises fascinating questions about our relationship with lunar cycles, while Virgo astrology remains a spiritual and symbolic framework.

I believe both conversations can live together.

  • We can respect science.
  • We can respect ancient wisdom.
  • And we can pay attention to our own lived experience.

If you notice changes around lunar phases, track them.

  • How did you sleep?
  • How was your energy?
  • What emotions were present?
  • What did your body need?

Your own patterns can become part of your wisdom.

I go much deeper into the science, spirituality, emotions, sleep, and nervous system here:

Why the Moon Affects Emotions, Sleep & the Nervous System

The Furrow Before the Seed Virgo New Moon Ritual

For this September New Moon, I want to give you one ritual that brings everything together.

You can make it as simple as paper and pen.

Or, if you have a garden, potted plant, or bowl of soil, you can actually draw a small furrow through the Earth with your finger.

  1. Pause for a moment.
  2. Look at the line.
  3. This is your line in the sand.
  4. On one side is what has already been lived.
  5. On the other is the field you are preparing.

Now ask yourself:

What has completed its purpose in my life?

What deserves my energy now?

What am I ready to tend?

What standard am I carrying into my next chapter?

Then choose one seed.

  • One intention.
  • One change.
  • One thing you are ready to grow.

You can write it on a small piece of paper and place it near your soil. Or simply hold the intention in your heart. There is no need for twenty intentions. Virgo knows the power of one thing tended well.

A Four-Body New Moon Ritual

You can also use your four bodies as a simple New Moon check-in.

Close your eyes.

Take a slow breath.

Then ask:

Subtle Body: How does my energy feel?

Mental Body: What story has my mind been repeating?

Emotional Body: What feeling wants space?

Physical Body: What does my body need?

Write down whatever comes.

One word is enough. One sentence is enough.

You are reading the soil.

The Virgo “One Small Thing” Ritual

Virgo reminds us that change often lives inside ordinary choices.

Choose one small thing that would make your daily life feel more supported.

  • Clear one drawer.
  • Protect one morning.
  • Go to bed thirty minutes earlier.
  • Take your vitamins.
  • Schedule the appointment.
  • Move your meditation cushion somewhere you will actually use it.
  • Drink the glass of water.
  • Delete the app that eats your time.
  • Create the boundary.
  • Take the walk.

Five minutes counts. Virgo works with what is real.

Virgo New Moon Journal Prompts

If you want to spend a little more time with this New Moon, sit with these questions:

  1. What part of my life is asking for more care?

  2. Where has my energy been going lately?

  3. What am I ready to leave on the other side of the furrow?

  4. What new standard am I choosing for myself?

  5. What does my subtle body know before my mind starts explaining?

  6. What thought is ready for a new story?

  7. What feeling wants room to move?

  8. What does my physical body need more of?

  9. What one seed am I ready to plant?

  10. What will help me tend that seed after the New Moon has passed?

That last question may be the most Virgo question of all.

An intention becomes a life through what we keep tending.

A Simple Virgo New Moon Intention

If you want one intention to carry into this lunar cycle, use:

I tend my energy with care so what I am ready to grow has healthy soil.

Or create your own.

Keep it simple.

Let your body believe it.

Then give it somewhere to live through your choices.

What I Am Planting Under This Virgo New Moon

As my leadership program moves toward graduation, I can feel space beginning to open in my life again.

My first instinct could easily be to look at that open space and ask: What can I create next? That is what creators do.

There is always another idea.

Another project.

Another place we could pour our energy.

But this Virgo New Moon is asking something different of me.

  • I want to protect some of that space.
  • I want more me time.
  • I want to tend to parts of my own soil that have received less attention during these last five months of expansion.
  • I want to listen before I fill the space.
  • I want to see what grows when my own energy receives the same devotion I so freely give to the things I create.

Because leadership has taught me something over and over again:

We serve from the soil we have tended.

We are all stewards of humanity.

How we show up matters.

How we care for our energy matters.

How we speak matters.

What we allow matters.

What we choose matters.

And sometimes the most loving thing we can do for the greater good is to draw a clear line into our own soil and decide what belongs on the other side.

That's my furrow. What's yours?

As the September 10/11, 2026 New Moon in Virgo begins a fresh lunar cycle, perhaps the invitation is very simple:

  • Before you plant the seed, tend the soil.
  • Before you decide what comes next, come home to yourself.
  • Listen to your energy.
  • Listen to your thoughts.
  • Listen to your feelings.
  • Listen to your body.

Then choose what deserves to grow.

And I’ll meet you under the Moon and stars…
